Washington : Following the election of Donald Trump as President, significant unease has emerged within immigrant communities regarding his administration's stance on birthright citizenship. Many families, particularly those who have migrated to the United States, are worried about the potential impact on their children’s citizenship status.
Under the current law, children born in the U.S. automatically acquire American citizenship, a provision enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. This policy, known as birthright citizenship, has long been a cornerstone of U.S. immigration law. However, during his presidential campaign, Trump made a controversial promise to end this practice, vowing to eliminate birthright citizenship as part of his broader immigration reform agenda.
Trump, along with his running mate, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate J.D. Vance, emphasized this position in their campaign materials. “From now on, children born on U.S. soil will only be granted citizenship if at least one of their parents is either a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident,” Trump's campaign literature stated.
