Proposal for 4% Reservation for Muslims in Contract Works Sparks Controversy in Karnataka
Bengaluru (Journalist File): The Karnataka government’s proposal to allocate a 4% reservation for Muslims in contract works has sparked a heated debate in the state. This development follows the recent controversy surrounding Waqf land issues, which has already drawn significant criticism toward the government. Notices issued to farmers who have cultivated these lands for generations, claiming that the land belongs to the Waqf Board, have led to widespread unrest across the state.
Currently, the reservation framework for contract works in Karnataka includes 24% for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), 4% for Other Backward Classes (OBC) under Category 1, and 15% under Category 2A, totaling 43%. The proposed 4% reservation for Muslims would increase this to 47%.
While there is speculation that a bill on this proposal might be introduced in the upcoming winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) clarified that it remains only a proposal at this stage, with no final decision made by the government yet.
